EndNote 20, EndNote X9 and EndNote X8 have a library sharing feature that allows you to share your entire library with up to other colleagues. Please note in order to be able to share your library you will first need to setup EndNote Sync. You do have the option of setting the library properties as Read-Only in Windows or Locked on a Mac , this will allow multiple people to open the library at the same time, but nobody will be able to add or edit references when the library is opened with Read-Only access.
If anyone is working in the library in anything besides Read-Only, you cannot have any other people in the library. A member of the shared library can use the Save a Copy command or Compressed Library command when the shared library is open, but it is not recommended. The copy or compressed version retains the shared library association and can only be opened by a shared library member. Any changes made to the copy or compressed version will sync back to the owner and all members.
If a member wants to provide some or all of the references to a non-member than the member should copy all or some of the references to a new library. The member can also request the owner send some or all of the references to a non-member since the owner can use the Save a Copy command or Compressed Library command and produce a library that is not considered the shared library.
